Debate on EU Settlement Scheme, 07/07/2021

Yesterday I had the honour of participating in a debate on the end of the application deadline for the EU Settlement Scheme, and the necessity of a grace period for “late” applicants. It is distressing that five years after the Brexit vote our friends and neighbours continue to deal with great uncertainty about their future, and yet more distressing that many thousands face the threat of removal from the country.

In my speech, I sought to highlight the harm the lack of clarity on what constitutes reasonable grounds for late application causes to EU nationals who suffer from domestic abuse and mental health issues.

You can watch my speech on Parliament TV, or read a transcript of it on Hansard.
