On Tuesday, the Member for Strangford, Jim Shannon MP, sponsored a Westminster Hall Debate on UK-EU fisheries allocations, following Brexit.
I was grateful to Mr Shannon for providing me the opportunity to make two interventions during the debate.
First, I highlighted the concern from industry that UK Government have not been transparent enough about the benefits and drawbacks for fisheries since our departure from the EU, and I asked if he agreed that engagement with industry needs to be a priority moving forward.
I later pointed to the ongoing labour shortages faced by the processing side of the industry, which has led to companies having to turn away business. I asked whether he would agree that this side of the industry mustn’t be overlooked by the Government when developing their support packages.
