The House returned after a short recess on Monday, kicking off with DWP Oral Questions. I had the opportunity to highlight the approximate 4,300 households in my constituency affected by automatic deductions from their Universal Credit awards, and the impact that has on children. You can read a transcript of my question, and the Minister’s answer in Hansard, or watch it on ParliamentTV.
Later that afternoon I attended the Westminster Hall debate, prompted by an e-petition, on Breed Specific Legislation, outdated laws that ban certain dog breeds despite growing evidence that there is need for reform in order for the legislation to be effective. I gave a speech speaking to Defra’s poor data when it comes to dog bites, the unnecessary euthanasia of seized dogs, and commending the Scottish SPCA’s ‘No Bad Breed’ campaign. You can read a transcript of my speech in Hansard, or watch it on ParliamentTV.
At Cabinet Office questions later in the week, I took the opportunity to highlight the USA’s concerns that Russia could launch cyber attacks on major infrastructure operators, and asked what steps the UK Government are taking to protect British interests in this respect. You can read a transcript of my question in Hansard, or watch it on ParliamentTV.
In this session I also had the opportunity to praise Centrica’s new Veteran Action Pathway, which provides veterans of the armed forces with apprenticeship opportunities and a package of support as they re-enter civilian life, and asked what ministers could do to support more organisations in rolling out similar programmes. You can read a transcript of my exchange with the Minister in Hansard, or watch it on ParliamentTV.
At Business Questions I highlighted Cambuslang’s excellent Meet and 2 Veg initiative, started by my constituent Jane Bainbridge and supported by Jan Ritchie, which hands out free food collected from supermarkets and food outlets that’s nearing its expiration date.
